About this class...
I always hear parents say that their kids LOVE to come to this class! As soon as the door opens for class,
the kids come flying in! I love to see the kids each week as much as they seem to enjoy being there.
This class is very much like group therapy in content, however the focus is fun, play and exploration so
the kids are inspired and excited to learn and grow. Kids learn a variety of tools to gain Awareness of
their Emotions, Thoughts and Energy. Yoga poses are not the main focus of the class, although they are
one of the tools the kids learn to calm & ground themselves. This class does not require kids to sit still or
be quiet for the entire 65 minutes! We alternate between games, movement or yoga, and group discussion
or focused calming activities such as the Drawing Meditation. I also love to take kids outside when it is
nice, adding the natural grounding effect of being in Nature.
A sample class....
A typical class begins with Circle Time. This is when we gather together to check-in with
eachother, share stories, and discuss the tools we learned the previous week. Each child
has the opportunity to share any stories or ask questions. The theme or energy tool is
usually introduced at this time. For example, if the 'tool' is the grounding cord, we learn what
to use it for (anger, frustration, overwhelm, anxiety, sadness, etc.), how to make one, what it
looks like, and how to test if it is working. Each week the kids have the opportunity to share
stories of using their tools, and we continue to explore in more detail the tools and what
they can be used for. Subjects such as bullying often come up, which we discuss in great
detail and determine how to use the tools and their awareness to respond in a healthy way.
Animal Games have become a favorite in all classes. We all become different animals in
a non-competitive game of chase, releasing stress, developing strength (try hopping around
like a frog for several minutes!), flexibility, agility & connection with all the kids in class.
Eagle Feather Clearing & Drawing Meditation
I created the Eagle Feather Clearing to introduce a fun ritual in class, allowing connection with
each child individually and as a group. We do this 3-4 times per session, unless the kids
request it more often. Once each child is 'cleared' with the eagle feather, one of them clears me
and then they go into the magic circle and color whatever they like. Kids often do not get to draw
whatever they choose and this ends up being a very grounding and therapeutic activity. Drawing/coloring
is also considered one of the 'refocusing' tools I teach.
During the drawing ritual, I often discuss the theme or energy tool in detail. I discovered that
the kids can focus more easily if their body is busy.
Yoga
Yoga asanas/poses are typically the next part of class. The asanas are gentle and often incorporate
animal poses, breathing techniques, Tai Chi poses, and yoga games. The yoga portion of class is about
having fun moving our bodies, releasing stress, relaxing through gentle movements, breathing, and
bringing awareness to our body and energy. We often go outside when it is nice enough to do yoga
in the courtyard.
We always end class with a Guided Meditation. This is one of the kids favorite parts of class, and one
of my favorite tools to bring awareness of body, mind and spirit. I take them on a magical journey to the
ocean, the desert, the mountains, the rainforest, or wherever they want to go. Sometimes we go on
a journey inside our heart (chakra), and explore what this special place looks like. Each class is different,
and I take requests from the kids.
I am also a Native American Flutist and incorporate the healing power of sound into every meditation.
We close our class by sharing any stories during meditation and bowing to our light/love within... "Namaste".
